Green Mountain Power is one of Vermont's major power companies, supplying power to over 265,000 residential and business facilities. They strive to research and develop new, renewable energy sources, making them stand out from many other energy companies nationally. They have worked with local farmers to develop cow power in Vermont. They have also partnered with NRG Systems in Hinesburg, VT to bring solar and wind facilities to Vermont at an affordable price for the energy consumer. They are especially dedicated to solar energy, and in 2014, Vote Solar named them a "Solar Champion."
Rutland, Vermont serves as GMP's headquarters and it is also their center for developing and adding solar power to the grid. Their goal is to make Rutland, Vermont the solar capital of New England, and they are most certainly headed in the right direction. They are currently working on a 2500kw solar array at the old Rutland landfill site. This will help them move towards their goal of providing Rutland with 10,000kw of solar energy in the near future. A chart of their current arrays and projects can be seen below. Overall, Green Mountain Power is spear-heading a revolution in Vermont, and they are working towards providing Vermont with a green, self-sufficient future.
GMP is being generous enough to provide us with a detailed data set that documents almost every aspect behind the creation of solar power. Along with Alan Betts and Sam Ligon, I will be analyzing this data to better peoples' understanding on how solar power actually works.
